Vietnam-Russia firm discovers gas off Vietnamese coast

August 31, 2007 ~

Vietgazprom, a joint venture between PetroVietnam and Russian gas giant Gazprom, has discovered natural gas off the Vietnamese coast.
The discovery at block 112 in Vinh Bac Bo (the Gulf of Tonkin) was confirmed following a geological survey and test drilling of the first well of the Bao Vang field.

It is estimated that 400,000 cubic meters of gas can be extracted per day. Gas condensate reserves have also been found.

Experts plan to make a comprehensive estimation of hydrocarbon reserves soon and outline proposals for further geological surveys of the field.

Gazprom and Petrovietnam signed a contract in 2000 for joint exploration and development of block 112 off Vietnam’s central coast. The contract also envisions hydrocarbons marketing.

In November 2006, the two companies signed a cooperation agreement.
